ArcticDEM est une initiative public-privé de la National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) et de la National Science Foundation (NSF) visant à produire automatiquement un modèle numérique de surface (DSM) haute résolution et de haute qualité de l'Arctique à l'aide d'images stéréoscopiques optiques, du calcul hautes performances et d'un logiciel de photogrammétrie Open Source. Il inclut la végétation, la canopée, les bâtiments et d'autres éléments de surface créés par l'homme. L'élément de 2 mètres est une collection de bandes plutôt qu'une mosaïque unique en raison des différences de projection entre les bandes.
Les fichiers DEM de bandes correspondent à la zone de chevauchement des bandes d'images stéréoscopiques d'entrée telles qu'elles sont collectées par la constellation de satellites en orbite polaire de DigitalGlobe. Les dimensions des bandes de DEM varient en fonction du capteur satellite qui a acquis les images et de l'angle hors nadir de la collecte. La plupart des bandes ont une largeur comprise entre 16 et 18 km, et une longueur comprise entre 110 et 120 km.
