Microsoft は、「一つの時代の終わり」と題して、ウェブブラウザでの Flash のサポート終了を発表しました。Chrome（バージョン 76 以降）、Microsoft Edge、FireFox 69 では、Flash がデフォルトで無効になっています。
そして、Google 検索のインデックス登録でも、Flash が除外されることとなりました。
Flash は、動きがなく平板な印象だったウェブページに、リッチなアニメーション、メディア、アクションをもたらしました。豊かな表現が可能なテクノロジーであったため、多くのコンテンツ クリエイターが刺激を受け、ウェブ上で新しいコンテンツを生み出してきました。Flash はあらゆるサイトで利用されてきたとも言えます。Flash コンテンツを再生する Flash ランタイムは、2013 年下半期だけで 5 億回インストールされました。
私の息子が Flash ゲームをやめられなくなって、妻に叱られていたことを思い出します。息子はしぶしぶゲームをやめましたが、今度は Flash が舞台を降りる番になりました。
Google 検索は、今年中に Flash のサポートを終了する予定です。ウェブページに Flash コンテンツが含まれている場合、Google 検索は Flash コンテンツを無視するようになります。単独の SWF ファイルは、Google 検索でインデックス登録されなくなります。ただし、ほとんどの場合、この変更はユーザーにもウェブサイトにも影響しないはずです。
Flash はウェブの発展に大きく貢献しました。その遺産は HTML5 などのウェブ規格が引き継いでいくことでしょう。
